Abdalla Ahmed, 3, and Madina Ahmed, 12, eat dinner at their family's apartment in Columbus. In the year that the Somali Bantu children have lived in the United States, they have adopted customs from their new home and retained others from their homeland. Although the children still follow the mealtime tradition of eating dinner after the men are finished, Abdalla has started a habit of carrying his toy gun everywhere based on his perception of American culture. The Ahmeds also spend the majority of their day watching American television and rarely leave the apartment.
