In the year that the Somali Bantu children have lived in the United States, they have adopted customs from their new home and retained others from their homeland. Although the children still follow the mealtime tradition of eating dinner after the men are finished, Abdalla has started a habit of carrying his toy gun everywhere based on his perception of American culture. The Ahmeds also spend the majority of their day watching American television and rarely leave the apartment.

Lillian, 4, uses a breathing machine to clear her congested chest while Linford, 8, talks to Bainbridge about his new tractor toy while Louella, 7, Louann, 3, and Lucy listen. The Burkholders are Old Order Mennonites and have electricity in their home, but when Dr. Bainbridge takes the breathing machine to an Amish household, the machine is powered by a foot pump.
