Edith Ruiz, a 23-year-old migrant from Oaxaca, Mexico, works in a Southeastern Ohio greenhouse. Ruiz lives with her husband Felipe Toral Cruz in Racine, Ohio. The two left her young daughter Veronica at home with other family members. They send money frequently, and have been able to send more since moving to Ohio. Other parts of the country, such as Florida, California and New York, have higher costs of living, making it difficult for Ruiz and other migrant laborers to send much money back to Mexico. Southern Ohioâs low living cost has allowed her and her husband to save and send more.
