Grace Santiago lives with 5 of her grandchildren and is supported fiscally by welfare and trash collection. 3 of the children have mental handicaps, including cerebral palsy. Although conditions are sometimes dire, the love and support Grace has for her grandchildren is immense.
Grace Santiago and some of her children and grandchildren ride in the back of her sonÕs sedan to pick up a group of family friends after a death in the family. In an effort to save money, gas and avoid expensive car repairs, the family travels together.

The original plan for the forest included this tract of land. 75 years later, the effect of private ownership is seen. The Appalachian region has a long heritage of resource extraction. The legacy of coalmines such as the Buckingham Coal Company in Glouster, Ohio, is filled with scars on the land as well as men and women that worked deep underground.
